The air inside the manhole was full of bad, poisonous gas. One brave worker, Mr. Arvind (40), sadly died after breathing the dangerous fumes. Two other men, Sonu and Naresh, were also hurt very badly and rushed to the hospital.
They went in to try and save each other, but the toxic gas was too strong.
Why Did This Tragedy Happen?
The workers went into the sewer without the right safety gear. They did not have special gas masks, oxygen tanks, or proper protective clothes. They were only given a rope.
The police found that a construction company had hired these men to do the repair work. The company had failed to give them the tools to stay safe.
It is against the law in India to send people into sewers to clean them by hand without proper safety mechanisms. This is called ‘manual scavenging,’ and it is forbidden by the law.
Police Action Shows Accountability
The good news is that the police took fast action. They arrested the manager of the construction company, Manoj Saxena.
The manager was the one in charge of the job and making sure the workers were safe. He has been booked for causing death by carelessness (negligence) and for breaking the law about manual scavenging.
This arrest shows that the authorities are serious about safety. They want to hold people responsible when they break important rules and put lives at risk in our city.
